There are many great eras in the history of jazz, but to this listener, a disproportionate percentage of my love and attention goes to the fertile post-bop grooves of the 1950s, particularly those captured by Alfred Lion's Blue Note label and Bob Weinstock's sprawling family of like-minded imprints (Prestige, Riverside, New Jazz, Swingville, Jazzland, etc.).
